Welcome to LARA Learning a Response to ageing

Project duration: December 2008 - November 2010

Changes in demographic patterns throughout Europe have been well documented. European and national policies confirm the need for new ways of accommodating new generations of older people. people to stay involved in working and in social life.” The project LARA seeks to support adult educators in developing responsive teaching and learning. By providing time for reflection, consideration of good practice from within Europe, review of the attitudes to and the realities of ageing, opportunities to self-audit existing professional skills and action plan for new ones the project will make a contribution to the competence of adult educatiors within partner countries and within Europe. The project provides a training manual for use by future trainers as a basis for course delivery and/or by trainees for self study. The training  equipes teachers and managers of adult education programmes to develop and deliver learning that is responsive to the demands and opportunities of ageing.

The lifelong learning programme

The European Commission has integrated its various educational and training initiatives under a single umbrella, the Lifelong Learning Programme. The programme enables individuals at all stages of their lives to pursue stimulating learning opportunities across Europe. The Grundtvig programme focuses on the teaching and study needs of those in adult education and alternative education streams, as well as the institutions and organisations delivering these services. Supporting lifelong learning and mobility in this way also tackles Europe’s ageing population problem.

LARA - The Film

Background to the LARA project

Partners in the LARA consortium have worked together since 2003 on projects related to relevant learning for older adults in Europe. We are committed to the notion that learning has a key place in empowering people and enabling them to be independent, successful and engaged well into later life. Teaching people to age well should be an integral part of the adult education offer. Teachers need to be trained to understand the issues and to develop new and attractive learning opportunities.

LARA aim and outputs

The LARA consortium will create and pilot a modularised teacher training course and accompanying handbook. We wish to prepare people to design and deliver learning that is responsive to the demands and opportunities of ageing. Underpinned by theory derived from national, European and international research, the training will stimulate the development and testing of practical teaching and learning strategies, methods and resources. Our end product will provide training in formats that can be self-accessed or used as the basis for face to face continuing professional development.

Target groups

The training course and handbook developed during the LARA project will be of interest to teachers, managers and planners of adult education. In this context the profile of teachers varies considerably and the LARA consortium will be inclusive in its definition. For professionals and volunteers, in education or in linked services, the training will be conceived to raise awareness of the rightful place of learning in the ageing agenda. By furnishing ideas, knowledge and skills that will enhance the teaching competences of those who work with adults we seek to promote learning that is relevant and life-enhancing.
